Rameswaram, Tamilnadu (India)

Sunrise Rameswaram

Rameswaram trip was one of the best trips for us. As we always prefer relaxing trip so we spent two Days there though 1 day is enough to see all the sightseeings.

Rameswaram is a town in the Ramanathapuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel. Pamban Bridge is a cantilever bridge on the Palk Strait that connects Rameswaram to mainland India.

Pamban Bridge, cantilever bridge

A perfect place for a small weekend trip for the people who love to visit historical/mythological places.

It is well connected by train and by road with the main cities in India like Chennai, Coimbatore, Thanjavur and Trichy. The nearest airport is in Madurai, 163 km.  The train ride to Rameswaram is very nice as the train will cross the sea to reach Rameswaram Island. It is always advisable to book the tickets before if you are planning to travel by train.

Our Story
In 2013 those days, we used to stay in Chennai. So we Planned for Rameswaram in one weekend.
That was a weekend when we had an extra off for Good Friday. It was March-end. Climate was also good.
So after finishing our Thursday duty, we reached Chennai Egmore station to catch the Rameshwaram express which leaves from Egmore ar 5:50pm.

The train was on perfect time so, next morning exactly early at 4.35am we reached Rameswaram station. It was dark outside that time. We did not make any hotel booking as we thought we will get any hotel easily as that was not any festive season. But the reality was different, We were not able to get any decent hotel. From the station to temple it was walking distance as we didn't have much luggage with us, we thought of walking. Finally with the help of a local broker who charged Rs.50, took us to a decent hotel. Hotel Shivam.Neat and clean Non-A/C room with attached washroom. Rs. 500 per day. Very near to the Agni theertham and the main temple.

Once we checked in the hotel, the time was around 5.30am early morning. We didn't want to miss the opportunity to see the sunrise. So we dropped our luggage in the Hotel room and left towards Agnitheertham to see the sunrise.

After sunrise, we Had our Breakfast idly and dosa with tasteful chutney. Then we came back to our hotel took bath and got ready for the sightseeing. We were standing near our hotel and was thinking about where to start. Before coming we did good homework
about the place with the help of Mr Google. Finally, a local auto rikshaw asked us about sightseeing and he asked for Rs.350. It was quite reasonable so we went to the main sightseeing by his auto rikshaw. He was a very good person and a local guide. We got another advantage on that day as it was partially cloudy and we could capture some beautiful photographs. Especially in the Villundi teertham beach. We didn't have any DSLR those days, all pictures were taken by Sony Coolpix.

We couldn't visit Dhanushkoti at that time as there was some communal war. In the afternoon we were back from sightseeing and had lunch around 2.30pm. Then took a small nap as after the delicious sambar rice it is difficult to keep your eyes open.
In the evening around 4pm, we had a wonderful boat ride near that Agnitheertham. The cost was Rs. 50 per head. It was for almost 1 hour, they will take you till the Srilanka border in the sea.
After that, we visited the main temple and spend around 45min to 1 hour over there.

Day 2

Today we took a bath in Agnitheertham. It is believed that all your sins will get vanished once you take bath here. We really enjoyed the swimming in the tideless sea. After that, we went to the place which is not much famous for the tourist. Thanks to our auto-rickshaw driver, he is the one who took us there. He took Rs.200 for that. While roaming in the previous day we found one Ramakrishna mission ashram. We went inside and from there only we came to know about this place. Swami Vivekananda memorial house is around 12 km from the main city of Rameswaram.

On the way to Vivekananda memorial

The road was through the forest and remote village. Completely remote area. Our auto rickshaw tire got punctured. At a certain point of time, I was really scared as it was a completely remote area, even if you shout for help also no one will come. But my fear was baseless and within half an hour our auto-rickshaw driver repaired his auto and we reach there safely.

At night we had train to Chennai from Rameswaram station. We left Rameswaram with beautiful memories.

Those who are interested in Indian history and mythological stories, they must visit Rameswaram. Before going Rameswaram you must read about the mythological stories of Rameswaram(available online) so you can relate the stories once you visit the places like Agni Theertham, Rama theertham, Lakshmana theertham, sita theertham, villundi theertham or Gandhamadana parvatham. In Villunditheertham there is a beautiful beach to see.
RameshwaramJyotirlinga is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
Rama Setu or Adam's Bridge in Dhanuskoti is another attraction which was mentioned in Ramayana, made by vanarsenas.
